Audacity 
Audacity is a versatile free audio editor.The track recording and editing options are very powerful and as a result Audacity can be used for and WAV, AIFF, OggVorbis, and MP3 files, and more. Use it to edit your sounds in the studio using Cut, Copy and Paste (with unlimited Undo), mix tracks together, or apply effects to your music recordings. It also has a built-in amplitude envelope editor, a customizable spectrogram mode and a frequency analysis window for audio analysis applications. Built-in effects include Echo, Change Tempo, and Noise Removal, and it also supports VST plug-in effects. Audacity works on actual audio only, and has no midi support.
LMMS Multimedia Studio 
LMMS Multimedia Studio is a free, modern audio program,similar to Fruity Loops Studio ®, which allows you to create melodies and beats, synthise and mix sounds and arrange samples.LMMS has a slick interface which includes a Song-Editor; a Beat & Bassline Editor; Piano-Roll view; 64 channel FX mixer and track-based automation. Riffworks 
RiffWorks T4 is a free recording and online song collaboration program for Mac and Windows. RiffWorks is designed and developed by Sonoma Wire Works. The software can be downloaded from Sonoma Wire Works and includes effects, drum tracks, and online music collaboration system. Once finished, songs can be posted on the website to share with everyone. There are pro versions available with expanded capabilities, but the free T4 package gives you four layers plus drums, InstantDrummer, a profile page, the ability to post online and iPhone app import.
RiffWorks has a built-in online music collaboration system, RiffLink. Songs are saved on the server and musicians can work on the same song file from different locations. The system also has synchronization and chat features and integrates with RiffWorld, where users can post songs and get feedback from others.
Mac users are fortunate being able to use GarageBand, a complete recording package.

Quartz Audio Master 
Quartz Audio Master is a free 4 audio track software programme with a 16 track midi sequencer. Only has delay, reverb, phaser and chorus but supports Quartz plug-ins. You can purchase more audio tracks and it has excellent guides to learn how to use the software.
FREE Hi-Q Recorder
FREE Hi-Q Recorder records streaming audio, Internet radio, webcasts, music, meetings, classes, DVD sound, convert LP’s, records, tapes and a lot more. It outputs any sound source directly to MP3. The MP3 quality can be adjusted by selecting the Bitrate and stereo or mono. Hi-Q Recorder can also be used as a universal audio or video sound file converter.
The MP3-only format makes it of limited value for serious recording, but ideal for podcasting and for use with iPods and other portable MP3 players.

Anvil Studio 
Anvil Studio is a multi-track audio and midi recording program with support for loops, lyrics and sheet music. It has only a basic interface and is best for midi recording and editing (unlimited tracks), as you only get a one minute audio track with the freeware version. Upgrade to eight audio tracks for $19.
